June – arguably the first month of the summer but definitely the month of PRIDE! đ
Whether you are part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally you will know that June is a month of celebration and also a time to remember the people who fought for their human rights and the generations following.
But have you ever wondered where Pride began?
The Stonewall riots also known as the Stonewall uprising began on the night of June 28th, 1969 in the Stonewall Inn. The gay community stood their ground in a spontaneous demonstration during a police raid. These Police raids were a regular occurrence and on that night the community had had enough. This began the fight for LGBT rights in the US.
A year after the uprising the first Gay Pride marches happened in cities across America. Nowadays Pride is celebrated and remembered in June all over the world thanks to those brave people who took part in the Stonewall riots in 1969.
Why the rainbow flag?
The rainbow flag, the symbol of Pride was designed by artist Gilbert Baker back in 1979. Gilbert was both an openly gay man and drag queen. With the encouragement of Harvey Milk (one of the first openly gay officials in the US) he designed the flag for the gay community. He felt this flag represented visibility and truth, and boy was he right
